Movie Review: Pirates of the Carribean 4 'On Stranger Tides'

Storyline: Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) crosses paths with a woman from his past (Cruz), and he's not sure if it's love -- or if she's a ruthless con artist who's using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn't know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.

Captain Jack is back... in an all new adventure! This time he's accompanied with the menacing Blackbeard, the beautiful ex-gal Angelica, the mermaids, the zombie pirates and the infamous Captain Barbossa.

Firstly, allow me to say that I absolutely loved this movie. Sure I definitely missed the ol' pirate crew of the previous three films including Will and Elizabeth, but the fresh start to this movie, the new plot, the new settings and the new characters definitely lived up to the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' expectation.

Wait! Before you proceed, you are now reading the warning that this review contains spoilers.

The movie started off in a very fast-paced motion with the humorous and witty of wittiest Jack Sparrow saving the life of his first mate Mr. Gibbs, which I found out his real name to be Joshamee (in preparation for your future son), with a nice English beard and wig, the only white and curly, before setting up to escape in what he thought was going to bring both of them out of the Crown's way, but only to be fooled by a fool's gold. Of course.
Next thing you know, Jack Sparrow is fighting another Jack Sparrow and is off to another big adventure... this time, on a conquest to find the Fountain of Youth.

Acting-wise:
Perfect! Absolutely perfect! You can't get a better Jack Sparrow than Johnny himself, Penelope did quite brilliantly opposite Mr. Depp. Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa, may I say was a real stand-out. I think this man just gets better and better in the 'Pirates' franchise; very witty and humorous. Ian McShane did a swell menace as the infamous Blackbeard but what I loved the most was the sheer intensity and dedication of the two newbies of the franchise, Sam Claflin and Astrid Berges-Frisbey.

25 year old Claflin played the stalwart missionary, Philip Swift while same-aged Berges-Frisbey played the beautiful mermaid, Syrena, who later on captured the heart of the young cleric. The duo did so well, I wanted to cry. They were very much in character and had a special chemistry that not only brought their characters alive, but also allowed their story to be a favourite with the many viewers making us want more of them.
I believe, wholeheartedly that they had more chemistry than Will and Elizabeth... and that's saying something! Brilliant lad and laddie.

Even though the film was shorter than the previous Pirate films, I still enjoyed the Spanish swashbuckling, the Barbossa humour and of course, the newly introduced mermaids in the time frame of 136/7 mins. As a BIG fan of the franchise, I can happily say that this movie is a two-thumbs up movie for the fans, the non-fans, the about-to-be's and the action/adventure type of movie-watchers.

It's definitely a film not to miss.

What to do, What to do

A little contemplating, a little pondering and finally I have come up with goals for this Christmas Holidays that will render me not lazy.

Firstly, of course, I have decided to make sure that I do all of my chores asap, for the happiness of the queen bee *cough* mum *cough* before I progress through the real goals which are:
  1. Learn 2 piano pieces
-That's right, 2. I'm going to go with 2 contemporary songs this hols, 'What makes you beautiful' by One Direction and 'Back to December' by Taylor Swift. Yeah boiiii

  2. Novel research
-I've mentioned this to my dear friend, The Book Blogger (check out her blog, it's full of amazing-ness) and I am very much committed to finishing it. Francine Rivers, the author of a favourite book of mine said that it took her 6 months of research before starting her novel and I'm only up to day 2 with mine, so please, bear with moi.
That's it! Those two will be the goals for these holidays, oh, and eating healthy as well. :)

Happy Holidays everyone!

While talking to my friend V, today about how I love a sweet-romance when it comes to a story, I stumbled upon this particular one and I absolutely loved it!
Defiance: The Anthology
Have a good read of it. It's short but sweet, like shortcrust pastry or a small chocolate bar. I shall give my movie review of Defiance very soon, but here's a little sneak peak:

Defiance: A Movie Review
Defiance is an absolutely amazing movie. Set during World War II in the Belarussian forests, Jewish brothers, Tuvia, Zus, Asael and Aron set off to avenge the deaths of their beloved family and friends; by staying alive.

Joining forces with the Russian partisan (resistance fighters) they endeavoured to build a village in the intimate location of the forests in order to protect themselves and more than 1000 Jewish non-combatants. The four brothers found the impossible task of scrounging for food and weapons while being hunted down by the Germans.

This movie is a highly recommended movie and a truly moving film with amazing performances from Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber and young stars Jamie Bell and Mia Wasikowska.

That's why we're here.

It was a typical Sunday afternoon, I sat still on my chair, relaxed in spirit but uncomfortable physically. The chairs were hard and they hurt my back. 'It's okay,' I thought. 'It's all for God.'
Every Sunday afternoon, you would find myself at church. You can never find me anywhere but church every Sunday, you can be sure of that. There are many ways to locate me while I am present there:

1.) Every praise and worship session, I would either be sitting down with a laptop in front of me doing the powerpoint slideshows or be up on stage playing keys, 2.) When the service begins (preaching and so on) I would either be finishing the announcements on the laptop or sitting on one of the chairs next to the friends or the cousins.

That particular Sunday afternoon I sat cross-armed and ankle-crossed staring outside the window. The trees swayed with the wind, side to side they went, their branches like the arms of the African people when they were deep in worship, as seen in TV and as awed by me. I tilted my head and smiled. How beautiful are God's creation. Even though they were the only trees there surrounded by a maze of asphalt roads and bricked buildings, there was no stopping them from worshipping.

Then a thought suddenly came, a realisation that shook my thoughts to the core. As humans, I know, as my personal opinion and because of the Bible, that we were created by God, given life and air to breathe, given the strength and power to face everyday for one thing; to worship.
Right then and there did I realise the huge analogy that would most likely rock generations of confused Christians such as myself, once; the wind was created by God and they cause the trees to bend and sway as an act of worship. God created us and He created the air we breathe...
Doesn't it make any sense?

God created everything in this world for one purpose; and that is to worship Him. There's no need to dilly dally and be distracted. It's not too hard to worship God. A simple thank You to him for all that he's done for you or a simple gesture of help to someone who needs it is already an act of worship. Let's not make this any harder, it's already simple enough.
You don't have to be a Christian to worship your Creator. He's already there, simply waiting for you to call on Him.

LOTR not-30 Day Challenge Post 6

Here we go, my last post for The Lord of the Rings 30 Day Challenge. I enjoyed this so so much and would love to hear from your LOTR nerd-lings out there about your answers!

Off we go!
Day 26: CHARACTER YOU WISH HAD BEEN FEATURED IN THE MOVIES

Tom Bombadil
Haven't actually read the books before, I learned from my older brother the importance of Mr. Bombadil in the Fellowship of the Ring. Apparently he was the only creature in the whole of Middle Earth who couldn't be affected by the power of the ring. He was supposed to have met Frodo and Sam as they journeyed to the Prancing Pony at Bree in the movie. Interesting. I hope Peter Jackson includes this scene (if ever he shot it and he better have) in the ultimate edition of the Lord of the Rings where absolutely every scene, extended and deleted is included.

Day 27: RE-EDIT THE MOVIES: WHAT SCENE WOULD NOT MAKE THE CUT

Absolutely Nothing. To me, every scene in LOTR was exceptional and I just love, love, loved each scene! Even the deleted scenes in the extended edition is a part of my heart. Nothing, absolutely nothing.

Day 28: A SCENE THAT ALWAYS MAKES YOU CRY

Sam carries Frodo
The movie was far too epic for me to shed some tears but there were a lot of scenes that really saddened me.
Fellowship of the Ring:
  • Gandalf's falling to shadow
  • Boromir's tragic death.
The Two Towers: Hmm, I can't really remember anything that made me that sad. Aragorn's supposed death wasn't really that sad because I knew he'll live.
Edit: I found a sad one! Haldir's death! Ugh, stupid Uruk-Hai! Haldir was the bomb!
Return of the King:
  • Faramir's facial expression when his father told him to take back Osgiliath even if it means he'll die.
  • When Denethor said that he wished Faramir died and Boromir had lived (so shattering) instead.
  • Theoden's death
  • Eowyn's supposed death especially when her anguished brother, Eomer cried.
  • When Sam said his infamous line to Frodo, "...I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you!"

Day 29: WHATEVER TICKLES YOUR FANCY

I very much disliked Denethor so I can't help but scream, "You go G!" Gandalf did me proud... :')

Okay, I'm a sucker for romance stuff and I have to say that this scene was incredibly sweet! Dear old Pete didn't include this in the final cut (yet again!) but did show the coronation of Aragorn where we see the two sweethearts together and I knew that they were together! This scene just proved it after I watched the Return of the King extended edition recently. They didn't give their relationship enough depth as it should have been given and besides, they're so cute together! My favourite male character and my favourite female character. Yay love!

Oh my gosh
Alright, I had my fun, onward then, to the very last question of the challenge.

Day 30: FAVOURITE LINE OR SCENE FROM THE TRILOGY

"I am no man!"

As a girl and proud of it, I absolutely, magnificently adored the fact that my favourite female character in the movie, namely the beautiful Eowyn, destroyed the Witch King with those powerful words. Definitely my favourite line in the trilogy. You go girl!

And that is it fellow LOTR nerd-lings, LOTR fans, non-fans (and you're missing out), anonymous and those who have no idea what these last 7 posts meant, but though I bid thee farewell, there are still more interesting things to come.

LOTR not-30 Day Challenge Post 5

Day 21: BEST DEATH SCENE

Smeagol/Gollum's death
Gollum's death would have to be the best death scene in the entire trilogy. There was just something beautiful watching Gollum, after years of struggle and hardship to finally be re-united with the One Ring, to his death. He was falling and falling and his mind didn't care about anything else but the 'precious' that he held. Absolutely brilliant scene. Gollum's a hero after all.

Day 22: WORST DEATH SCENE

Saruman's Death
Ugh... this wasn't included in the final cut of the film, and for good reason! This scene when Grima stabbed Saruman at the back and he fell, fell, fell to his death in those spike things where he was impaled, made me cringe like the dear hobbits, Merry and Pippin. Disliked this scene, it was rather graphic, especially the sound.

Day 23: WORST DECISION BY ONE OF THE CHARACTERS

To me, personally, there weren't any, at all, because their decisions led to something good. Pippin sure came very close with his curiosity with the palantir on ROTK but that helped Gandalf see more into Sauron's plans, Frodo banishing Sam was definitely a good decision because if he didn't, then they both would've been killed by Shelob, I'm sure. Nope, no bad decisions here.

Day 24: SADDEST CASUALTY/COLLATERAL DAMAGE

Boromir's Death
This was a really sad part for me. Boromir was such a great character. He sacrificed his life to save Frodo and help out the others and that made me teary (not literally), but it was still very sad. Even though he tried taking the ring from Frodo, he was redeemed by his apology and the fact that he sacrificed his life. At the end of ROTK when Frodo was surrounded by the Fellowship, it just wasn't complete since Boromir wasn't there. >sigh< but it was all for good reason.

Day 25: FAVOURITE OVERALL CHARACTER

Aragorn
Again, I didn't want to choose, but ever since, I've always thought Aragorn was THEE best character in the trilogy. Apart from his ruggedness ;), he was a noble character and he made such an outstanding first impression at the FOTR when he killed the candles using his fingers! Ouch much! He was also just a great character overall, strong, generous, kind, loyal, brave and a great leader.

LOTR not-30 Day Challenge Post 4

Day 16: THE UGLIEST ORC OR URUK

Gothmog
Epitome of the word 'Ugly'. It was just retardedly ugly! I don't know exactly what happened to his face. Actually I do. Peter Jackson just couldn't help but splatting moulds of clay-ish type things to the pre-made sculpture during his production. Disgusting. 'Nuff said.

Day 17: A SCENE THAT MAKES YOU CRINGE (CHEESINESS)
"Gan-dalf?"
The way Frodo said "Gandalf" in a rather stretched and just plain weird way, was just so cheesy I can't help but cringe everytime I see the Return of the King. asodnisgaposuweh gives me the shivers...

Day 18: BEST FIGHT SEQUENCE

Battle at Pelennor Fields
I loved loved loved the bit when Theoden, with a smile on his face says "Make safe the city!" and then turns around when he hears the stump stump stump and the bellowing of the Oliphant/Mumakils as they approached in line. That was beyond epic! Especially when good ol' Legolas comes into the play and kills one by himself. Eomer killing two was pretty epic too and the darling Eowyn killing one as well was heroic. Brilliant battle!

Day 19: WORSE FIGHT SEQUENCE

This isn't it.
Once again, I must say there was no bad fight sequence in the movie at all! I enjoyed every single one of them. But what I thought wasn't up to my standards was the battle at Osgiliath with Faramir, during the Two Towers. It wasn't really a battle, it was more like 'escaping' so I guess it doesn't count.

Day 20: IF YOU WERE FROM MIDDLE EARTH WHERE WOULD YOU LIVE

The Shire
I wouldn't mind living in the Shire and doing what Mr. Frodo is doing up there. I love a good book and the Shire with all its green hills and pastures and its peace and happiness that surrounds it sounds like a very great place to stay. But I'll be a big traveler and I wouldn't mind living in the greener parts of Gondor. Its provinces would be good. Rivendell's not that bad either but somehow there's just something pulling me away from a place that's way too perfect.

LOTR not-30 Day Challenge Post 3

Day 11: FAVOURITE HORSE

Shadowfax

Shadowfax, first introduced in the Two Towers was definitely my favourite and for a reason that is not of personality but of vanity. Shadowfax was just so pretty! When it was called, it came, galloping in slow-motion, its white mane blowing in the wind. The stallion was an amazing creature to behold and it was Gandalf's dearest friend.

Day 12: FAVOURITE SCENE IN ELVISH

"Nîn o Chithaeglir lasto beth daer; rimmo nín Bruinen dan in Ulaer"
When Arwen was being chased down by the Nazgul, she crosses the river and utters these beautiful Elvish words that called for the river to come crashing down, taking with them those horrific black riders. I kept repeating the words because it was just so amazing the way she spoke it.

Day 13: LEAST FAVOURITE SOUND/SOUND EFFECT

There was this particular goblin/orc thing that made this disgusting animal sound, like those mini dinosaurs from Jurassic Park that comes by the pack and eats you alive (poor little Camilla Belle). The sound just gave me the creeps! More than the shriek of the Nazgul. I'm tossing a dice whether it was a goblin from the mines, an orc at the siege of Osgiliath or an orc-ish goblin at the siege of Gondor.

Day 14: A SCENE THAT ALWAYS MAKES YOU LAUGH

"Shall I describe it to you? Or would you like me to get you a box?"
During the battle at Helm's Deep when Gimli, as short as a dwarf can be, tries to jump to see past the walls and asks Legolas to tell him what's going on, Legolas replied with his witty remark about describing or getting him a box then Gimli makes this laugh that just always cracks me up! Dwarves and elves...always humorous.

Day 15: THE SPIFFIEST DRESSER

Casual-ish wise: Eowyn
Absolutely adored her dresses in the movie! I loved how it perfectly fit her and she carried them so well. She's great because she's not as formal as Arwen (though I adored her dresses too) and she can pull off something simple like that gorgeous white dress she wore when she was in Rohan overlooking Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli's entrance. Simple, yet elegante. Magnifique!

ps. I'm sorry for my absolutely weird little comments after each one. I'm losing my mind and my creativity. I really am at a loss for words.

LOTR not-30 Day Challenge Post 2

 Day 6: FAVOURITE SONG

Pippin's song entitled "All Shall Fade" moved me the first time I saw it in the cinemas. It had a powerful tune that was both eerie yet beautiful. It was filled with emotions of sadness, grief, despair and of a man who longed for the love of his father. Billy (Pippin) sang it so beautifully that that I was not surprised when the crew cried when they first heard it.

Day 7: FILM YOU'VE SEEN THE MOST TIMES
I am very sure that I've seen all three films in par in the number of times and I mean that to be hundreds of times. I'm actually going to be watching the extended of the Fellowship tonight. YAY!

Day 8: BEST USE OF MAGIC OR SUPERNATURAL GIFTS
YOU SHALL NOT PASS! 'nuff said.

Day 9: FAVOURITE MEMBER OF THE FELLOWSHIP
I absolutely refuse to choose a favourite. Though I know that a lot of the "Favourites" would be answered to be Aragorn, I believe that each member of the fellowship brought something to the movie and the journey. They are all special all, my favourites.

But then again, I know that I must properly answer this question so I'm going to admit that I do love Pippin A LOT. But >sigh< Aragorn is in par with him as well.

Day 10: FAVOURITE MAN
FARAMIR
Not Aragorn. I really love Faramir, and re-watching the extended edition of The Two Towers and ROTK, I fell in love with his character even more. He was a man of nobility and of courage. Against the wishes of a father who did not show a single love for him, Faramir was such a strong character, wise, kind and generous, sweet to his dearest lady love (though not much seen in the movie) and most of all, he stood up for what he believed is right.

LOTR not-30 Day Challenge Post 1

 Day 1: FAVOURITE HOBBIT
Sam
Samwise Gamgee, more known as Sam to his good mates. Must I explain why? After re-watching the trilogy, especially The Return of the King, I just admired Sam's strength, determination and his unending encouragement to the all-ready-to-give-up Frodo. He also fought a huge spider, namely Ms. Shelob, who I know would've killed me in an instant.

Day 2: FAVOURITE LOCATION

The Shire
Definitely the Shire. It was just so beautiful and too wondrous to behold. Though this picture isn't the accurate potrayal of it when it was first introduced at the Fellowship of the Ring, I still favour the Shire's country look with it's green, luscious hills instead of the too holy and sacred of Rivendell, the stony and hard Minas Tirith or the callous and weed-infested Rohan.

 Day 3: LEAST FAVOURITE LOCATION

The Fellowship inside Moria
Firstly, I apologise for not having an accurate picture of the inside of the mines. I couldn't find one :(
Not that I'm a claustrophobic or anything, because I'm not... or at least I think I'm not... but Moria definitely didn't appeal to me. It was dark, dank, too underground and suffocating and with yucky goblins and dead, skeletal dwarves and goblins alike. Throw in a good ol' Balrog, fell beast, in there and you're not in for a treat.

 Day 4: BEST MEAL

Humour wise, definitely when Eowyn gave Aragorn her 'stew'. It was just so hilarious to see Aragorn's facial expression in his attempt to be a gentleman and not to offend a fair lady. Funniest meal in the trilogy!

 Day 5: FAVOURITE WEAPON

Sting
Bestowed and given to Frodo by Bilbo, "Sting" as it was called, was forged by the Elves and glowed whenever there are orcs around. When I first saw it shining in the Battle of Amon-Hen, I absolutely loved it. When Sam used it to fight Shelob in her lair at Cirith Ungol, it worked wonders.

In the Holiday Mode

Holidays, holidays, two weeks of full on no studying, no homework, no worries... wrong.

Yet again, sorry for the cliche and whatever, but these two weeks of supposed holidays is actually a full on study sesh. No, I'm not in year 12 and worrying about VCE (for those living in Victoria), yes, I am in highschool and I'm not in Middle School, but yes, I do value my studies very much.

In all honesty, it's annoying when older kids tell you things like, "Oh it's just year >insert your year level here<", "Who cares about year >you get the gist<" or "See what happens when you reach year 11 or year 12."

Yes, I understand that they're the more important years of school, but it doesn't mean that I shouldn't even try for the current year we're in. We don't want to fail school! Except maybe for those who just don't give a bee's bottom. We still want to be able to reach our goals and do good. I don't know, maybe it's just my friends and I, but I'm pretty sure many others out there feel the same way.

Back to the main topic however, these 'holidays' is organised as such:
Wake up late.
Zone out for a few minutes.
Go out of your room to get some food.
Eat.
Yawning and thinking of going back to sleep.
Have the urge to study.
Take a shower instead.
Thinking about studying.
Going online after thinking about studying.
Eat.
Watch a movie.
Yawn sesh.
Sleep.
Day wasted.

I don't want my day to be like that!! I have promised myself that I will be productive these holidays! I feel that I've accomplished something though with some cleaning and some musical instrument a-playin but the studying is the harder goat to pull in. I need like a male goat to attract it or something.

But I'm glad for the break, thank God for no homework but still praying for motivation. It's a hard task but I'm not going to be slack. Definitely not. Exams in less than a month, I'm going to be kicking your butt after these holidays.

Onward!

Andy Whitfield - The Warrior Who Died Fighting

Today, 39 years old Andy Whitfield (famous as Spartacus) lost his battle to cancer. The non-Hodgkin Lymphoma cancer took away the young star's life and to tell you the truth, I have never been so down about a celebrity's death ever before.

Andy Whitfield...my only wish is that you have accepted.

Dear Boo, I don't think I can live without moisturising cream.

It's essentially the biggest and most important part of finishing your freshening up sesh after you take a shower or even after just washing your face. Seeing my older brother happily not applying his face with some, makes me imagine how my skin would feel if I did that and well, rough and tough like a cow under the sun and dryer than your first batch of cupcakes without milk. But I'm sure that you're smarter than that and instead, you used buttermilk.

Well, It's not a beauty thing, it's merely the 'feeling' thing. I don't like the feeling of a lot of things. I don't like the feeling of sandpaper or not sandpaper-ed wood. I dislike the feeling of scales but I do love the feel of a smooth and silky paper. See?

Fine, maybe it's just me but a few celebs out there, I'm thinking Hayden Panettiere but don't hold on to that just yet because I'm not too sure if it is her, whose beauty secrets is mainly moisturising le face! But whoever it may be, I'm not copying her, I'm simply agreeing.

Don't hate on the subject, I just felt like saying it because well, Cetaphil Moisturing Cream for Dry, Senstive Skin is staring me in the face and making me want to talk about it. There, I've turned it around now and it's ingredients will now haunt me in my sleep.

Faithfully, Fash

Pride & Prejudice... yet again.

Today I finally have my own copy of Pride and Prejudice The Movie in Blu-Ray! Happiest as can be and I see a drowning bee.

Right there, just beside my father's beautifully dead roses. They need some water and a good hit of Spring weather. Winter's doing them no good.

Happy as can bee.

A Childhood Favourite: Winnie the Pooh

I have many childhood favourites in terms of TV shows. It goes back to the likes of Powerpuff Girls, Cow and Chicken, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Art Attack, The Looney Tunes Show and so forth, but I have to say the topper of that list is good 'ol Winnie the Pooh.

I absolutely adore that yellow, hunny-loving, no-pants-wearing bear! Every time the show came up, I would stop what I'd be doing, get as comfortable as possible and have a good watch. It was just so funny and the characters are absolutely lovable! Not to mention that it's funny too!
Here's just one of the many reasons why Winnie the Pooh is a favourite:

Here comes Pooh...

Don't you just love him?!

I'd give him a cuddle and a hunny jug for that subtle Chandler Bing-ish comment.

le TV Survey

If you're not much of a TV fan, then I suggest you skip this post, since you wouldn't enjoy it. I enjoyed it because I'm a watcher. But if the curiosity bug hits, then by no means, go for it.

If you could be anyone from 3, who would you be?
Chandler Bing for the win!

Give a random quote from 5.
Sheldon: Rock, paper, scissors, lizard, Spock.

Would a 1/4 crossover work?
That would be the coolest thing! For sho!

Which has better theme music, 2 or 4?
Vampire Diaries doesn't really have a definite theme that I can remember but Bones has a catchy tune. When I hear it, I run.

Pride & Prejudice

Starting this week, my class will be studying on a new book for English Literature and it happens to be Pride and Prejudice.

As a big fan of the movie where Keira Knightley portrayed witty Miss Elizabeth Bennet, I am beyond excited to do this as an assessment.

Then again, many would think, "Oh but young girl, that movie is absolutely abhorring and I'm fearful to say that it rendered the book, forgive me for saying, rather atrociously as it did not follow Jane Austen's remarkable plot as it should be."

Shush. I don't care whether it followed the book page for page or not. I will not see the Pride and Prejudice TV Series that goes for more than 6 hours which my English teacher said, "Only covered about 1/3 of the book."

I love the movie and currently loving the book and I must say I am perfectly content in my standing whether others like it or not.

Till the next ball!
